Homeopathic

More proved the common variety, Bufo rana and the Brazilian toad, Bufo satytiensis. Shakespeare was correct in speaking of the toad as having "sweltered venom."

The poison is excreted by glands in the skin of the back. "Quintessence of toads" figured largely in the therapy of Salmon's Doron Medicon (1583), where it is commended as a "Specific in the Dropsy." Homeopathic provings and poisonings have shown that this reputation is founded on fact.

The chief laurels of Bufo have been won in the treatment of epilepsy. Bojanus cured many cases, and no medicine has served better in the treatment of this disease.

Few people who have witnessed a characteristic epileptic seizure can have failed to notice the curiously toad-like aspect assumed by the subject.

The epileptic seizure and the status epileptic give the clearest correspondence to the Bufo range of action. Epilepsy is often found among the effects of self-abuse in the young.

Remarkable action on the nervous system and sexual organs.

Epileptic Symptoms

Epileptic seizures occur during the night, connected with the sexual sphere. A variety of symptoms occur before epileptic spasms. Seizures at the time of menses in women when sexual desire is excited in young men due to onanism or during sex. Falls down unconscious with a blood-curdling scream.

Bufo is indicated in epilepsy when the attacks occur during sleep at night. The patient may or may not be awakened by the attack; if not, when he does awaken, he will have a violent headache. Epileptic symptoms are worse in a warm room.

Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease

Convulsions from suppurative conditions. Fetid discharges and exhalations. Injuries to fingers, pain runs in streaks up the arms. Septic lymphangitis, due to injuries, when pain runs up in streaks. Striking rheumatic symptoms. As if a peg in joint.

Marked periodicity, quartan fever. Dropsy. Paralysis. Carbuncle. Buboes. Causes low grades of inflammatory action, fetid exhalations and discharges. Cancer. Severe late cancer conditions. Clarke has removed the fetor in hopeless cases of cancer with this remedy.

Affects circulation, causing heat flushings, burning in different parts. Anesthetic spots on skin. Marked uterine symptoms. Spasms in children after nursing, angry or frightened mother. Causes a desire for intoxicating drink and produces impotence. Extremely sensitive to light and noise, the latter is intolerable.

Mind

Confusion and loss of memory, bordering on imbecility. Prematurely senile. Great weakness of memory, idiotic. The mind remains childish; only the body grows. Of use in feeble-minded children. Feeble-minded, idiocy, silly, tittering. Talks nonsense, then angry if not understood.

Anxious about health. Fears animals, strangers. Fear of mirrors in the room. Biting nails. Nervousness and trembling worse in open air. Music is unbearable. Lamenting alternating with crying. Easily laughs or cries. Cries much with epilepsy. Easily startled.

Sad, restless. Sadness on waking. Dullness better in the evening. Walks the floor and wrings the hands. Ill-humor after menses. Irritability in the morning on waking. Irritability at night after retiring. Irritability after menses.

Delirium or apathy, with hot head. Stupor and inability to speak. Deceitfulness. Rage while alone. Propensity to bite. Howling, impatient, nervous, imbecility. Longs for solitude, yet dreads being alone.

Anger before convulsions. Stupefaction between convulsions. Unconsciousness after convulsions.

Moral depravity. Derangements of the sexual sphere. Depravities due to bad inheritance. Desire for solitude to practice masturbation. It arouses the lowest passions; the patient is not only low-minded but develops a low type of disease also.

Abdomen

Colicky pain after drinking milk and after smoking. Violent colic with convulsive movements of jaws and limbs. Sensation as if cold balls running through bowels. Buboes in groins. Convulsive movements in abdomen after spasms. Spasms end by convulsive movements in abdomen. Epileptic attacks originate in the abdomen.

Back

Jerks in the nape of neck, epileptic attacks. Lumbago, worse rising up or least motion. Swelling of bone, size of a fist. Decay of dorsal vertebrae. Stiff neck after sleep.

Breasts

Mastitis. Bloody oozing from nipples. Bloody milk. Breasts cancer. Induration in breast glands. Violent pain in breasts, worse at night. Palliative in cancer of breasts. Offensive bloody discharge from breast.

Chest

Sensation as if chest and heart were constricted. Burning like fire in chest. Rapid motion of diaphragm.

Cough

Suffocative. From any emotion. From burning or stitches in larynx. At night, provoked towards 3 or 4 AM by tickling in larynx, which he feels only at this hour. In consequence of cold feet. Violent, with vomiting. Dry, with sharp pain or burning in chest.

Ears

Music is intolerable (Ambr.). Every little noise distresses. Purulent otorrhea, ulceration and bleeding of external ears. Heartbeats reverberate in ears, in meningitis. Pains worse cold washing. Swelling of ears and parotids.

Eyes

Eyes red, injected. Itching, swollen, painful. Eyes sunken during epileptic attack. Burning, itching and ulceration of lids. Left eyelid paralyzed. Little blisters form on eye. Right eye open, left nearly closed. Eyeballs rolled upward and to left before attack. Strabismus. Aversion to the sight of brilliant objects. Pupils dilated.

Face

Face greyish. Burning and redness of swollen face. Lips black. Face bloated and distorted, mouth and eyes convulsed. Bathed in sweat during spasms. Sweat runs down face. Momentary hot flushes of face. Phlegmonous erysipelas, which leaves face deformed. Cold water causes pricking of face.

Female

Menses too early, too copious. Epilepsy with menses. Menses with headache. Menstrual pains run into legs. After menses, ill-humored. Offensive, bloody discharge, clots. Watery leucorrhea. Offensive purulent leucorrhea. Burning and swelling in ovaries and uterus. Burning heat and sharp pain in ovaries. Hydatids in ovaries. Ulceration of cervix, with burning pains. Head

Face bathed in sweat. Congestive headaches with flushed face. Pillow hurts occiput. Pressure like two iron hands holding temples. Headaches after breakfast. One-sided headaches, worse by light and noise. Numbness of brain before epileptic attack. Headache with epilepsy. Head at first drawn to one side, then backwards before an attack. Lancinating pain in occiput, inclining head to fall backward, in meningitis. Violent orgasm in head. Profuse sweat on head. Hair falls out. Sensation as if hot vapor rose to top of head.

Heart

Feels too large. Heaviness about heart. Rapid heart action in exophthalmos. Palpitations with headache during menses. Constriction about heart. Palpitations after eating. Palpitations with nausea. Kidneys

Limbs

Trembling of limbs. Limbs become stiff, numb. Cramps in limbs worse in cold air. Bruised pains, trembling, cramps, arthritic swellings. Arms go to sleep easily. Swelling of hands and arms, burning pains. Lymphangitis, red streaks under skin. Staggering gait. Feeling as if a peg were driven in joint. Paralysis, swelling blue-black around nail, pain in streaks up arm. Sciatica. Contusive pains in arms, legs and loins, during motion. Arthritic pains, worse after sleep. Swelling of bones. Liver

Enlargement of liver. Pulsating pain in liver like an abscess, with vomiting of bile.

Lungs

Burning like fire in lungs. Suffocative cough. Asthma. Difficult breathing from compression of larynx, trachea and heaviness of chest, must sit up or bend forward. Anxious, difficult, gets shorter and shorter, during fever. Dyspnea, pants like a dog. Mucus or bloody expectoration, or pure blood, raised most in morning and evening, with sensation of cold in chest.

Male

Buboes. Disposition to fondle organ (Hyos., Zinc.). Disposition to masturbation. Effects of onanism. Involuntary emissions. Impotence, ejaculation too quick. Spasms during sex.

Modalities

Better from cold bathing. Better putting feet in hot water. Better cool air. Better bleeding. Worse from warm room. Worse sexual excitement. Worse from masturbation. Worse least motion and injuries. Worse on waking. Worse with a full moon.

Mouth

Burning in mouth, as from acid, worse cold water. Bloody saliva. Constant licking of lips. Fetid odor from mouth. Stuttering and stammering, angry when not understood. Falling out of teeth. Convulsions after extracting teeth. Mouth wide open before epileptic attack. Ejection of frothy, bloody saliva from mouth during epileptic attack.

Nose

Nosebleed with flushed face and pain in forehead. Better after nosebleed. Nosebleed almost producing faintness. Sneezing in the evening, when going to bed. Coryza, pimples on upper lip. Discharge of greenish-yellow, putrid mucus, worse in the evening. Mucus descends into posterior nares. Ulcerated, burning nostrils. Loss of smell.

Perspiration

Profuse sweat, oily, on head and face. Profuse sweat with weakness. Sweats during spasms. Sweats during sleep, towards morning. Cold sweat. Copious, clammy sweat, on hands and arms. Sweats during epilepsy.

Rectum

Dysentery with delirium, headache and sleeplessness. Bowels torpid. Ascarides. Hemorrhoids, discharging bright red blood. Stools white. Difficult, hard stool, with cold body and hot head.

Skin

Itching and burning. Lymphangitis, red streaks under skin. Patches of skin lose sensation. Pustules, suppuration from every slight injury. Pustules, tellers and eruption of small nodules. Pemphigus. Sleep

Sleepiness after having been in open air. Constant yawning, can't keep lids open. Starting in sleep, awakens as if frightened. All symptoms worse on waking.

Stomach

Burning pain in stomach. Weak, faint feeling in stomach. Eructations, as from rotten eggs. Nausea and vomiting from nervous excitement. Vomiting after drinking. Yellow fluid in vomit. Vomiting of blood and bile.

Temperature

Coldness and shivering, with moist skin, nervousness and trembling, worse going into open air. Fever with apathy or delirium, and cold feet. Burning heat in various parts. Limbs burning hot during fever.

Throat

Convulsive and constrictive motion in throat, with sensation like a stone there. Dryness in throat, impeding swallowing, in the morning.

Comments

Bufo provokes the tendency to the practice, or even causes impotence. The Indian women of Brazil are aware of this last property and administer the venom to their husbands in food or drink when they wish to free themselves from their marital attentions.

L. Guthrie told a story of an Italian peasant, apparently dying of dropsy, whose wife, weary of the interminable length of his illness, thought to hasten his end by putting a toad into his wine. The man was completely cured.

According to Lippe, Bufo is especially indicated in epilepsy when the attacks occur during sleep at night. The patient may or may not be awakened by the attack; if not, when he does awaken, he will have a violent headache.

Epileptic symptoms are worse in a warm room, but there is also great sensitiveness to cold air and wind. Epilepsy that's worse with a full moon. For epilepsy in children with delayed development (Bar-c.). Keynote: masturbation in children or with epilepsy.

Lymphangitis

Swollen glands, buboes, particularly in the groin and armpits. May go systemic, pus, and suppuration. Infection leading to swollen glands and fever (Carb-an.). "WW state," decomposition, breakdown in tissues with pus and septic states. Difficult to heal. Cancers with deterioration (Kreos.) in the late stages.

Greasy skin, foul discharges, and odors. Carbuncles, boils, large water-filled vesicles (bullae). Marked periodicity, quartan fevers. Hemorrhages. Boeneke noted a "desire for solitude" in order to masturbate.

Guernsey commended it in panaritium where the pain runs in streaks, all the way up the arm. Also when the fingers have been injured and look black, with pains running in streaks up the arm.

E. E. Case reported a cure with Bufo cinereus of "nosebleed daily for several weeks with flushed face, heat, and pain in forehead better by the bleeding; there was also easy perspiration in general, apt to be offensive, especially on the feet."
