Homeopathic

Bromine forms a leading constituent in the mineral water of Kreutlach and Woodhall. Bromine is useful in scrofulous children with enlarged glands, which are swollen and indurated, but seldom suppurate. Like the other halogens, Bromine is a strong antiscorbutic.

Marked effects on the respiratory tract, especially larynx and trachea. Constriction and membranous formation occur in larynx, spreading upwards. A sense of suffocation. Cough, worse entering a warm room. Nosebleed accompanies many problems, especially those pertaining to the chest and respiratory tract.

Excoriating discharges. Profuse sweats and great weakness. Weak and easily overheated, then sweaty and sensitive to drafts. Fainting. Tremulous all over. Tendency to spasmodic attacks. Emaciation. Headache worse from drinking milk or from stooping.

Boring pains in bones. Cancer. Breast cancer. Enlarged and indurated glands. Glands which become hard, but seldom suppurate. Left-sided mumps. Complaints from being overheated. Complaints are worse at seaside; sailors coming ashore suffer from asthma, which is relieved when they go to sea again.

Mind

Much anxiety of the mind. Fears a stroke. Fear of ghosts. Quarrelsome. Very bad humor. Takes no interest in household duties. Loss of ideas. Forgetfulness. Aversion to any kind of work, even reading.

Sad. Indifferent. Low-spirited, inconsolable. Does not feel normal, but cannot tell why. Sits alone in her room without doing anything. Looks constantly in one direction without saying anything.

Desires to be carried. Crying and lamentations with a hoarse voice. Cheerful mood, desire for mental labor. Visions when in the dark. Expects to see something jump around the floor. Delusion that strange persons are looking over the patient's shoulder and that she would see someone on turning.

Abdomen

Tympanitic abdomen, bloated. Enlargement and induration of spleen. Passage of much wind.

Back

Neck stiff. Goiter. Glands of neck much swollen. Encysted tumors on sides of the neck. Aching at inner border left scapula. Boring in spinous processes of different vertebrae. Glands of neck enlarged. Cystic tumors on both sides of neck.

Breasts

Tumors in breasts with sharp pains, worse left. Sharp pains from breast to axilla. Sharp, shooting pains in left breast. Won't pressure. Suppression of menses in scirrhus breasts. Hard, uneven tumor in right breast.

Chest

Violent cramping of chest. Chest pains run upward. Cold sensation when inspiring.

Constitutions

Suited to scrofulous children with enlarged glands. Blue-eyed, fair people, especially children with thin, pale, delicate skins and very light hair and eyebrows to scrofulous constitutions. Blondes.

Ears

Hard swelling of the parotid gland, warm to touch after eruptive fevers. Noise in ears.

Eyes

Lachrymation with swelling of tear glands. Pupils dilated. Protruding eyes. Flashes before eyes. Darting through the left eye.

Face

Ashy gray. Pale, red, alternating.

Swelling and hardness of parotid gland, feeling warm to the touch. Suppuration of left parotid, swelling remaining hard and unyielding. Sensation of cobweb. Seems drawn to a point at nose.

Female

Menses, bright red blood. Menses flow passive with much exhaustion. Dysmenorrhea. Depressed before menses. Queer ill feeling a few days before menses. Menses too early, too profuse, with membranous shreds. Violent contractive spasms before or during menses. Chronic ovaritis. Dull constant pain in left ovary. Swelling of ovaries. Itching in vagina. Flatus from vagina, noisy. Vagina as if sore. Suppression of menses in scirrhus breasts. Prolapsed uterus, with mental derangement.

Food

Desire for acids, which aggravate and cause diarrhea. Water tastes salty.

Head

Head congested, fears a stroke. Headache worse drinking milk, stooping. Headache in sun passes off in shade. Headaches deep in the vertex with palpitations. Migraine of left side, worse stooping, especially after drinking milk. Headache worse heat of sun and from rapid motion. Sharp pain through eyes.

Heart

Hypertrophy from gymnastics with palpitations. Cutting pain running upwards, with heart disease. Violent palpitations worse lying on left side. Nervous palpitations with nausea and headache.

Kidneys

Constant desire to urinate with tickling sensation in tip of urethra. Dribbling of urine with burning after urinating. Urine scanty and dark. Urine turbid, deposits a whitish sediment adhering to vessel. Urine leaves a red coating on vessel. Urine contains large flakes of white mucus. High colored urine with eczema.

Limbs

Icy cold forearms or hands. Boring pain in one or both tibiae. Left arm, lame in cardiac affections.

Lungs

Whooping cough. Dry cough with hoarseness and burning pain behind sternum. Suffocative fits, choked, croupy or wheezing cough, with palpitations. Spasmodic cough with rattling of mucus in the larynx, suffocative. Thick white expectoration. Spasms of glottis. Croup after febrile symptoms have subsided. Fibrinous bronchitis. Bronchial tubes feel filled with smoke. Wants to take a deep breath, but it excites cough. Lungs feel coated with down. Every inspiration provokes cough. Colds start in larynx, go upward and downward. Deep hoarseness if heated. Difficult and painful breathing. Larynx is cold. Laryngeal diphtheria, membrane begins in larynx and spreads upward. Dyspnea with great swelling. Asthma, difficulty in getting air into lung (Chlor. in expelling air). Asthma of sailors going ashore. Better at sea.

Male

Swelling and induration of testes, worse slight jar. Sharp pain in glans and sides of penis. Swelling of left testicle, with sore pain, or sensation of coldness. Increased sexual desire. Nightly emissions.

Better from any motion. Better exercise. Better riding on horseback. Better at sea. Better from nosebleed, shaving. Worse from warmth. Worse damp warm. Worse overheating. Worse from evening until midnight. Worse when sitting. Worse in warm room. Worse heat of sun. Worse chilled when hot. Worse cold and damp weather and cold air. Worse water or diet. Worse from sea bathing. Worse dust. Worse draft. Worse lying on left side.

Mouth

Dry, parched. Aphthae with affection of eyes. Water tastes salty.

Nose

Tickling, smarting, as from cobwebs. Fan-like motion of ale (Lye.). Nosebleed relieving the chest. Stoppage of right nostril. Long continued, obstinate coryza. Acrid, burning coryza, with violent sneezing and soreness of the nose. Pressure at root of nose.

Perspiration

Sweats from least exertion or exercise. Sweats on palms. Viscous sweat, with cool skin.

Rectum

Painful hemorrhoids with black stool. Hemorrhoids bleed, intensely painful, worse application of cold or warm water. Diarrhea after eating oysters and sour things.

Skin

Acne, pimples, and pustules. Boils on arms and face. Glands stony, hard, especially on lower jaw and throat. Hard goiter (Spong.). Gangrene.

Sleep

Great drowsiness when reading. Continued yawning in respiratory troubles, with drowsiness. Full of dreams and anguish, jerking and starting during sleep, full of fantasy and illusions, difficult to go to sleep at night, cannot sleep enough in the morning, trembling and weak on awaking.

Stomach

Sharp burning from tongue to stomach. Pressure like from a stone. Stomach pain, better eating. Sour things disagree. Vomiting like coffee grounds, bloody mucus. Aversion to customary tobacco smoking.

Temperature

Chills with yawning and stretching, repeated every other day, as a chilliness, and cold feet. Chills on alternate days, with cold feet. Internal burning heat, as if between skin and flesh.

Throat

Tonsils swollen, deep red, with network of dilated blood vessels. Pain, worse swallowing fluids than solids. Feels raw, even with hoarseness. Tickling in trachea during inspiration. Hoarseness coming on from being overheated. Even a small goiter oppresses. Stony hard, swollen glands. Diphtheria.

Vertigo

Dizzy when crossing a stream of water. Vertigo worse on bridge. Vertigo at the sight of running water. Vertigo with nosebleed. Vertigo with a tendency to fall backward.

Comments

Migraine, chiefly on left side, worse from stooping, especially after drinking milk. Sensation deep in the brain as if vertigo would come on. Vertigo with a tendency to fall backward, worse at the sight of running water or if he puts his foot on a bridge, worse in damp weather. Vertigo with nosebleed.

The glands (thyroid, testes, maxillary, parotid) are swollen and indurated. Tuberculosis, especially of right lung. Hypertrophy of the heart and palpitations. Pain in heart going up to axilla. Evenion causes oppression at heart.

Soreness and crusts inside nose. Nosebleed accompanies many affections, especially of the chest. There is a peculiar headache with coryza. Loud emissions of air from the vagina.

Particularly affects the internal head, left side. Predominantly a left-side medicine. Better at the seaside (opposite Nat-m.), but worse in sailors when coming ashore.

Guernsey noted that cases of diphtheria begin in the larynx and run up. In croup with all the croupy sound, there is a loose rattling in the larynx with the breathing and coughing, but no choking in the cough, as there is in Hepar sulf.

Relations

Antidotes: Am-c., Camph. Salt inhibits the action of Brom. Antidoted by: Camph., Am-c., Mag-c., Op. Useful after: Iod., Phos., Spong.
