Homeopathic

Bismuth, including the sub-nitrate, was used by alchemists to prepare the "Magistrale of Bismuth." According to Teste, Bism. corresponds to slow digestion with fetid belchings. It is hardly ever indicated where belchings are not odorous or sour.

Bism. exerts its chief action on the stomach and alimentary canal, causing irritation and catarrhal inflammation of the digestive tract, kidneys, and skeleton.

Gastric disorders with vomiting, purging, and prostration. The surface of the patient is generally warm. In summer complaints of children, there is a cadaverous smell of flatus or stool. Desires company; the child holds on to its mother's hand.

Gastralgia, not associated with catarrh (Nux-v.). Stomach pain is accompanied by habitual constipation without vomiting or with vomiting of insipid, ropy mucus. The stools are preceded by crampy, pinching pains in the stomach.

Cancer of the stomach, nausea after every meal relieved by cold drinks. Water is vomited as soon as it reaches the stomach, violent belching with a putrid smell. Violent retching and vomiting of bile and brownish fluid with extreme pain. Burning, griping, sharp with dull pain in the back or spasmodic vomiting.

Oppressive anxiety, with a small pulse, vertigo, and prostration. Hemorrhage of dark blood. Prostration. Pains are tearing, pinching, burning, and screwing. Sensation of heaviness in internal parts. Ailments after abdominal surgery.

Mind

Apathetic. Fickle-minded, begins this, then that, holds but a short time to any one thing. Anguish, never long in one place or position. Restlessness.

Discontented and dissatisfied. Complains about his condition. Irritability in daytime, better in the evening. Fear of being alone on waking. Solitude is unbearable. Desire for company. Children hold on to mother's hand.

Abdomen

Flatulence. Distended abdomen. Abdomen bloated in ridges. Rumbling along colon. Pinching pain in lower abdomen with rumbling.

Back

Boring and burning pains. Tensive pressure on the right side of the neck near cervical vertebrae. Pain in the left side of the back, as after stooping too long. Pressure in spine better bending backward.

Chest

Angina pectoris, pain around heart, left arm to fingers. Burning and piercing in the chest and back. Flushes of heat in chest and head. Aching in the right half of the chest, near sternum. Pressure and squeezing across the chest. Hot, burning, constriction of the chest.

Ears

Pressure and drawing pains in left external meatus.

Eyes

Aching of the eyeballs. Thickened mucus in both canthi. Secretion of mucus in the corner of the eyes. Stupor, with mist before the eyes. Foggy, dim vision during vertigo.

Face

Earthy, blue around the eyes. Aching pain in cheekbones, better running about and holding cold water in mouth. Face pale and cold. Face pain alternating with gastric pain.

Female

Menstrual blood dark, pitchy.

Food

Intolerable thirst. Craves cold drinks, which are vomited.

Head

Headache alternates with stomach pain. Neuralgic pain, as if torn by pincers, involves face and teeth, worse eating, better cold. Cutting or pressure above right orbit extending to occiput. Headache extending to the root of the nose. Pressure in occiput, worse motion with heaviness. Headaches return in winter. Cutting pain in brain.

Heart

Angina pectoris, pain around heart, left arm to fingers. Violent heartbeat.

Kidneys

Urine, frequent, watery, copious, and pale. Emission of urine entirely suppressed.

Limbs

Cramps in hands and feet. Tearing in wrist. Paralytic weakness, especially in right arm. Tearing in fingertips under nails (Berb.). Itching erosion near tibia and back of feet near joints. Dry palms and soles. Limbs cold. Blue color of forearm and thigh.

Lungs

Dyspnea, from burning, constriction in chest. Cough, day and night with copious expectoration. Pinching in middle of diaphragm, extending transversely through chest. Dark, bloody, or blood-streaked.

Male

Aching pains in the testes. Gonorrhea. Nocturnal pollutions without dreams. Pressing, aching in the (right) testicle. Seminal emissions with lascivious dreams.

Modalities

Better from cold drinks. Better cold applications. Better bending backwards. Worse motion. Worse from eating, overeating. Worse when alone. Worse summer, winter.

Mouth

Metallic, sweetish, sour taste on back part of tongue. Taste bitter. Inflammation of mouth, with whitish excoriations and fissures. Gums swollen. Profuse salivation, teeth loose. Constant secretion of a brownish, chick saliva. Tongue coated white, swollen. Black, gangrenous looking wedges on dorsum and sides of tongue.

Nose

Nosebleeds, with dark blood. Heaviness at the root of the nose.

Perspiration

Surface covered with warm sweat.

Rectum

Painless discharge of blood from rectum. Cholera infantum, when the body remains warm. Cholera morbus and summer complaint, when vomiting predominates. Watery diarrhea with a putrid smell. Painless diarrhea with great thirst and frequent urination and vomiting. Stools papescent, foul, watery, smell cadaverous. Prostration after stool.

Skin

Burning, smarting in the skin. Ulcers, gangrenous black, bluish. Dry gangrene, parchment-like.

Sleep

Frequent waking, as if in a fright. Sleepy in the morning, a few hours after eating. Restless on account of voluptuous dreams, with or without emissions. Drowsy while working. Starts in sleep, thinks that he is falling, awakes in a fright. Unrefreshing sleep. Lascivious, vivid dreams, sometimes without, frequently with seminal emissions.

Stomach

Eructation after drinking. Burning, feeling of a load. Will eat for several days, then vomit. Bilious vomiting after eating. Slow digestion with fetid belchings. Pain from stomach through to spine. Gastritis, better from cold drinks, but vomiting when stomach becomes full. Stomach pains, better bending backwards. Pressure as from a load in one spot, alternating with burning, crampy pain, and heartburn. Atrophy of stomach. Stomach hangs down, hard lumps are felt below navel. Nausea after eating or nursing. Nausea and pressure in stomach after eating, during headache. Stomach cancer, vomiting brownish water. Vomits with convulsive gagging and pain. Water is vomited as soon as it reaches the stomach. Vomits all fluids. Vomiting with vertigo and prostration. Bilious vomiting after eating. Vomiting and purging, with great prostration, flatulence, white tongue, and cadaverous stools.

Teeth

Gums swollen, with pain like excoriation. Pressive pains. Toothache, better from cold water in the mouth, worse when it becomes warm (Coff.).

Temperature

Chill with deathly coldness of whole body. Chilliness intermittent, periodical. Coldness of the whole body, externally. Great heat. Flushes of heat, especially on head and chest. Intermittent fever, small pulse.

Throat

Inflammation of the throat. Burning pain in the throat, sometimes insupportable. Difficult swallowing of fluids, which return through the nose. Sore throat, awaking at night and paining very much, with short cough and retching. Ulceration of uvula with burning and tearing.

Vertigo

Giddiness in the morning. Vertigo from violent exercise. Vertigo as if the brain were turning in a circle. Violent vertigo with pressing pain in forehead.

Comments

Grimmer wrote that it's good for stomach cancer, nausea after every meal relieved by cold drinks, water is vomited as soon as it reaches the stomach. Great affinity for disorders of the right upper limb or forehead. The patient is restless, moving about, anxiety. Desires company (Phos).

Violent risings of a putrid smell with violent retching and vomiting of bile and brownish fluid with extreme pain. Pressing heaviness with stomach pains. Headache alternating with gastralgia.

The pains are chiefly piercing, tearing, burning, cramping, and screwing. There are tearing pressing pains in the bones of the hands and feet, spasmodic disorders of the muscles of face and limbs.

Sensation of heaviness in inner parts. Oppressive anxiety, small pulse, vertigo, and prostration. Hemorrhage, with dark, pitchy blood. Anemia, with an itch-like eruption. Corrosive itching on side of tibia. Gangrene and gangrenous ulcers, bluish or dried, parchment-like.

Craves cold drinks, which ameliorate symptoms, but aggravate after it warms up. Cold drinks and cold bathing improve the headache and toothache. Summer complaints. Headache returning in winter. Motion relieves most symptoms, but aggravates some headaches. Pressure in spine is better bending backward.

O. W. Smith verified "Pain in stomach, better bending backward and eructation, tasting of food eaten twenty-four hours before."

Teste cured with the oxide a wearing, nightly cough in a hysteric woman and a case of sub-acute cystitis with irregular paroxysms of crampy pains in the bladder, also a case of phlegmasia alba dolens (left). Petroz cured another such case.
