AMPELOPSIS QUINQUEFOLIA
Second to third potency.
Ampelopsis.
Cholera. Dropsy. Hoarseness. Hydrocele.
Our pathogenetic knowledge of Ampelopsis is due to observations on two children poisoned by chewing the leaves. They were quickly seized with violent vomiting and purging, with considerable tenesmus; then collapse, sweating, and faint pulse; then deep sleep for two hours, from which they were aroused by return of vomiting and purging. There was dilatation of pupil for hours after commencement of attack.
Hansen gives as an indication: "Chronic hoarseness inpatients who were scrofulous in their youth." S. M. Worthington has cured with it renal dropsies that had resisted other treatment and a case of hydrocele. He found the decoction the most efficient preparation.
Compare: Vitex agnus castus (botan.); รthus. cyn.

Clinical Tips & Practitioner Insights
"The condition which most frequently calls for OPIUM is paralytic ileus after an abdominal section. There is a loop of bowel which is completely paralysed, accompanied by reversed peristalsis and the pumping of bile back into the stomach. The patient is horribly sick and brings up masses of bile stained, rather foul smelling vomit and has an extreme sensation of abdominal distension. I think that is the commonest condition in which OPIUM is most useful. Incidentally, it is very interesting that in the majority of cases in which you get a paralytic ileus, you find there is a history that OPIUM or one of its derivatives has been given before or after operation."
"OPIUM is indicated when retention of urine follows parturition. I have twice confirmed."
"OPIUM is a drug to be thought of for those abnormal children who lie and steal, and are heading for a mental institution."
"Paralytic intestinal obstruction - OPIUM."
"Diabetic coma"
