Therapeutic actions: Regulates menstrual flux, allays pain, cures diabetes. It is often used in the treatment of wounds, absces and carbuncle of the diabetic patients. In albuminuria it gives wonderful result.
 
How it has been approved in the Allopathy and Homoeopathy?
 
It is widely being used in 'Ayurveda' the Hindu Science of Medicine. In the year 1872, Dr, Bhuban Mohan Sarkar invited atiention of British doctors by writing an article in the 'Medical Gazette' on therapeutic actions of this drug. Then Dr. Kirton and Dr. Watt noted it in the 'Dictionary of the Economic Products of India. Dr. Avarse, Dr. M'cloid. Dr. Thornton, the then famous physicians approved it as the nice medicine for diseases of uterus. Dr. Evars said "It has never failed in my hands in specially relieving painful dysmenorrhoea." Dr. M'cloid said that intake of root-pulp with pepper from seven days preceding menatrua-tion till the commencement of discharge, prevents painful dysmenorrhoea.
The name of this plant was mentioned in the 'Indian Homoeopathic Review' in 1919. In 1925, Dr. S. Sarkar of Dacca observed the existence of sufficient Magnesium salt in it while he was carrying on researches with this drug.
He prepared Alcohol Extract and thought that the utility of Abr. Aug. in the treatment of uterine haemorrhage might be due to presence of Magnesium salt. In 1929, Dr. Henry carried on experiments with the said plant (vide page 2721, Journal of American Chemical). In 1929, Dr. Chopra, Dr. Ghosh and Dr. B. Mukerji. after carrying out their works on the same drug found Petroleum Ether, Fix-Oil and Alkaloid (traces), Magnesium salt, and water soluble base.
To be brief, it acts effectively throughout the body but in cases of pains, dysmenorrhoea, skin diseases, diabetes, Insomnia weakness, rheumatic pain, giddiness, albuminuria etc., the effectivity is much better.
 
Physio-Chemical action: This drug is used as an uterine tonic in the treatment of congestion, neuratic and various dysmenorrhoea. It regulates the menstrual flow.
 

Symptomps

 

Mind:

Hot tempered, fretful, easily irritated; insomnia; can not concentrate mind.

Head:

Giddiness, tendency to vomit, burdened or emptiness of the head; headache.

Eyes:

Weak-sightedness due to suffering from diabetes, eyes are often closed, paleness, heaviness due to insomnia.

Ears:

Buzzing sound in the ears, hard of hearing.

Nose:

Frequent sneezing attended with headache.

Mouth:

Tremendous thirst.

Tongue:

Clean and dry painful swallow.

Throat:

Prefers liquid diet.

Lungs:

Throbbing sensation with heaviness as if something has been put on the chest.

Heart:

Palpitation, acute pain.

Appetite:

Too much; tendency to take food continuously; non appeasing of hunger.

Belly:

Painful, formation of wind.

Stool:

Constipation; stiff stool in black lumps.

Urine:

Diabetes, urinal discharge (imperceptively), thirst, starchy urine Urine of high specific gravity.

Male gen. organ:

Wound of the urethra caused by urine containing starch and sore of the foreskin; frequent urination at night.

Female Rep. organ:

Irregular menstruation, severe pain of the pelvis during menstrual discharge; scanty discharge of clots of dark red blood; nausea; virtigo; pain in the hands and legs followed by weakness; painful dysmenorrhoea. The patient lacks energy to leave bed sometimes convulsion like hysteria; ovaritis, ovarian neuralgia, vaginismus, menstrual colic etc.

Spinal cord:

Weakness and backache.

Limbs:

Feeling of thinness, lack of energy; pain.

Skin:

Dry skin with scabies, aggravation at night; small pimples, carbuncle, Skin disease of the diabetic patient.

Sleep: 

Not enough, drowsiness, headache.
 
Dose: 10-25 minims or Powder form 5-6 grain four times a day.

PHARMACY - abrom-aug. Abroma augusta radix. Olat kambal. Perennial Indian hemp. Devil'sCotton. Abrome.

N.0. Sterculiaceae. Tincture of leaves, roots.

Historical dose:  Tincture and all potencies.

CLINICAL - Aching, pains. Amenorrhea. Colicky, pains. Constipation. Cough. Debility. Dysmenorrhea. Dysentery. Edema. Emaciation. Headaches. Hoarseness. Insomnia. Itching. Leucorrhea. Malaise. Menstrual colic. Menorrhagia. Throbbing, pains. Vertigo.

HERBAL - Abroma augusta, indigenous to India. is an evergreen large shrub or a small tree with drooping branches. It grows wild in India's warmer regions. but is also cultivated in gardens for its beautiful deep scarlet flowers. The roots and bark are used as an emmenagogue.

HOMEOPATHIC - The proving. carried out from 1970-1973 by the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, consisted of 40 provers and 20 controls. Dr. D. N. Ray, of Calcutta, made a short proving in 1919 and Kishore made one in 1972, all provings are included in the drug picture.

General debility. Feeling of weakness after stool. Tingling and numbness, feeling of warmth and burning. Trembling, lethargy, weakness, uneasiness, drowsiness and heaviness in the whole body.

Body aches particularly in the joints, aggravated by rest, during movement. Malaise, with feverishness, cough. Emaciation and weight loss with general debility. Edema and puffiness in the whole body, first appeared in face and eyes with eruption, aggravated from heat or motion, ameliorated by cold, rest.

MIND- Peevishness. Anxiety. Restless with dislike for everything. Quarrelsome. Easily excited and easily angered. Contradiction is unbearable. Irritability. moroseness. Indifference. vacantness. Sadness of mind. Feeling of joy. Immoderate laughing from trifles.

Abdomen - Griping pain in the abdomen with dysentery, aggravated in the evening. Colicky pains. Dislikes a tight band around the abdomen, brings on suffocative attack, with soreness near right hypochondrium. Rumbling and ineffectual urging for stool. Flatulent distension of upper abdomen with moderate urging before stool. Feeling of warmth in upper abdomen.

Back - Aching. lameness and sharp pains in lumbar region. Bubbling sensation in left lumbar region. Sore, bruised pain in lumbar region, worse morning on rising. better motion. Aching or tingling in the nape of the neck. Pressure and constriction in the nape of neck.

Chest - Aching pain in the whole chest. Burning in chest. Sharp pain in left infra-clavicular region with catching of breath. Stinging pain in left side of the chest. Aching pain in the left intercostal muscles. Catching pain in the right lower chest with weakness and tiredness. worse movement.

Ears - Pain and soreness with stitching sensation inside the right ear, worse evening. better during the day.

Eyes - Redness of eyes without pain or discharge, ameliorated from cold application. Itching in the right eye with redness. better rubbing the eyes. Asif foreign bod)-is lodged in the eyes. Heaviness of upper eyelids. Watery exudation with redness of left eyeball. Burning in eyeballs with vertigo. Sore pain, aggravated by sunlight. ameliorated by closing the eyes. Aching pain in right eyelid. Agglutination. redness and swelling of eyelids.

Female - Amenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea. Manses scanty or copious. Menstrual colic and heavy bleeding. Pain in the lower abdomen, with delayed and scanty menstrual flow. Menses with dark colored clots. Leucorrhea with pain in the back and lower abdomen. Yellowish. white offensive leucorrhea. Leucorrhea. thin, acrid, whitish discharge. Pain in right ovarian region, better hot applications. Thin, profuse leucorrhea in emaciated young girls.

Food - Voracious appetite. Loss of appetite. Dislike for food with heaviness of abdomen. Increased thirst for cold water with dry mouth. Thirstlessness. Aversion to smoking. Aversion to starchy food. Desire for fish, juicy things. Desire for sweets, Desires coffee and tea. Desires salty foods, sour foods.

Head - Headaches with heaviness and dull aching pains. Aching and throbbing pains. Burning sensation, better application of cold water. Tingling pain. Heaviness in forehead. Sharp pain in forehead, ameliorated by pressure. Bursting pain. Dullness, dizziness. and heaviness in fore-head, ameliorated by bathing. Throbbing pain in temples. Heaviness, aching pains. Dull pain in vertex, warmth in vertex. Sensation as if being pressed with a blunt object over the supraorbital region.

Heart - Heart, palpitations with undesirable feeling of distress inside the chest, better lying quiet.

Kidneys - Urination followed by weakness and exhaustion. Fishy odor of urine.

Limbs - Aching in the limbs with weakness. Aching pain in shoulder joints. Tenderness in flexor, pronator group of muscles of forearm. Trembling. burning pain in left hand. Paresis, numbness and tingling in right lower extremely with anxiety, insomnia and restlessness. Heaviness of limbs. Tiredness in thighs. Aching pain in the knee joints. Lameness and stitching pain. Drawing pain in calf muscles.

Lungs - Shortness of breath with sense of suffocation, with fever, worse during in-spiration, lying down on left side. Dry and barking cough. Suffocative cough. Cough with expectoration, whitish or yellowish, salty, mucoid, sticky, thin or thick. Lumpy sputum resembling boiled starch, easily hawked up, worse at night. Must support the chest during cough. Sensation as if the respiratory tract would be torn out.

Male - Lack of sexual desire in males. 

Mouth - Dryness of tongue and lips. Sore pain due to the ulceration of the comers of the mouth. Tenderness and swelling of gums, worse chewing, better cold application. Aching pain with swelling of the gums, worse when eating or from any attempt to move the jaw. Stitching pain in gums on right side.

Nose - Sneezing with weakness. Burning in the nose with fever and coryza. Profuse coryza. thin. watery, bland discharge with sneezing. Sensation of obstruction of nostrils at night. Thick, yellow, mucopurulent discharge with weakness.

Rectum - Inactivity of rectum. Obstinate constipation . Constipation and headache. Ineffectual desire for stool and rumbling inside abdomen. No desire for stool with pain in abdomen. Hard nodular stool. Weakness after stool. Unfinished sensation after each stool.  Constipation with hard. scanty stools. Insufficient, and straining with stools. Stools hard balls like sheep dung.

Skin - Sensitive itching all over the body, with pimple-like eruption. Dryness and burning sensation of skin, worse washing in hot water. Dry small vesicular and popular eruptions (resembling prickly heat) with black discoloration on different parts of the body. Itching without eruptions on the whole body, particularly thighs, during undressing, night. better open air.

Sleep - Insomnia. Sleepiness. Sleep in short naps. Restless tossing in bed with sensation of warmth. ameliorated by hard fanning. Sleep disturbed by dreams. Vivid dreams about accidents. Dreams of robbers and dreadful incidents. Dreams of extreme thirst. Dreams as if somebody is calling him by his name.

Stomach - Eructation, ameliorated by passing flatus. Heaviness in epigastrium with disgust for food and headache. Feeling of emptiness. Sharp pain in epigastrium. Colicky pain in the epigastrium with fullness of stomach. Nausea while taking food with watery stool, aggravated while eating.

Temperature - Heat all over the body at night with constant chilliness, body aches and sweat, aggravated at night. Temperature ranges between 99 to 100' F. Thirst at night, with fever.

Throat - Dryness at night, with great thirst. Hoarseness of voice. Soreness with tickling sensation and dry cough. Stinging pain in the left side of throat with headache. Stitching pain on right side of the throat with sore pain. Burning in throat with tickling cough aggravated in the evening.

Tongue - Bitter taste Stinging pain in tongue. worse at midnight. from warm application. Heaviness and soreness of tongue.

Vertigo - Vertigo and giddiness with headache. worse lying down. Vertigo with nausea. 

Vision - Blurred vision with aching pain in lids, aggravated by sunlight and bright light.

COMMENTS - In the female provers Abroma showed a capacity to relieve menstrual pains and to reduce the tendency 10 heavy bleeding. None of these provers had a history of leucorrhea but during the proving yellowish white leucorrhea with offensive odorant pain in the lower abdomen was recorded.

ln menstrual disorders it can be compared with Pulsatilla and Viburnum. Pulsatilla patients are generally mild and weep easily, whereas in Abroma the patient is bad-tempered and easily angered.
